Principal's Report

Welcome back to Term 3. We hope you had a wonderful holiday, filled with rest and relaxation. It's great to see our students returning to school full of enthusiasm and we hope you had the chance to enjoy some outdoor activities and spend time with friends and family. We hope the break provided a much-needed rest and that everyone is ready to go

Seeing the student’s faces as they entered the school the first day of school was fantastic. It was wonderful to witness the warmth and happiness as the students greeted friends that hadn't seen for two weeks.

The start of the term has been fantastic, with students quickly getting back into the swing of things. It's impressive to see how seamlessly everyone has transitioned from the break to the classroom.

Students have shown great enthusiasm and readiness to tackle new challenges, and it's evident that they are eager to engage with their work and extracurricular activities.

Our teachers and staff have been equally enthusiastic, ensuring that the learning environment is welcoming and supportive. The collaborative spirit among students and the positive energy in our school are truly amazing. We look forward to building on this strong start and continuing to support each student's academic and personal growth throughout the term.

An Important Message from the Principal – We need You!

Education Week 2025: “Ignite Your Potential”

Education Week is a special time across NSW public schools, and this year’s theme – “Ignite your potential” – is all about celebrating the incredible learning happening every day in our classrooms. It’s a chance to recognise the dedication of our teachers and the wonderful growth we see in our students. At Eastwood Public School, we’re proud to be part of a public education system that nurtures curiosity, creativity, and confidence in every child.

Eastwood Open Day – Tuesday 5 August

We’re excited to invite families to our Open Day on Tuesday 5 August as part of Education Week. It’s shaping up to be a fantastic day! Come along and enjoy Open Classrooms, a picnic-style Morning Tea, musical and dance performances, art displays, and even some friendly Parent vs Teacher competitions. The day is the result of lots of planning, creativity, and hard work from our amazing staff and students—and we can’t wait to open our gates and share it with you. Bring your picnic rugs, your smiles, and help us celebrate everything that makes Eastwood Public School such a special place to learn and grow.

We Need Your Help – Volunteers & Cake Stall Donations!

Events like these aren’t possible without the help of our wonderful parent community. Right now, we’re calling on families to lend a hand—even just for an hour—to help keep these opportunities going.

Sadly, we’re starting to rely on just a handful of generous parents, and it’s becoming unsustainable. Without broader support, events like Open Day may not be able to continue in future, and that means fewer community celebrations and fewer memorable moments for our children. Volunteering strengthens school spirit and builds meaningful connections—for your child, for you, and for our entire community.

Here’s how you can help on Tuesday 5 August:

Canteen Helpers (Picnic Pack Assembly & Distribution)
Help us put together and hand out morning tea picnic packs. Even one hour makes a huge difference!
👉 Sign up here

Cake Stall Donations
Bake some goodies to help raise funds for school programs and equipment.
👉 Sign up here
Cake boxes available at the front office
Drop off: Tuesday 5 August between 8–9am at the canteen

Cake Stall Volunteers (Sales Help)
Can you help us sell the delicious treats between 8am–1pm?
👉 Sign up here

Let’s come together and show what makes Eastwood such a special place to belong. Please reach out, get involved, and make a difference. With your support, Education Week 2025 will be a celebration to remember!

A Busy Term

This term will be very busy with a variety of fantastic activities for our school community. We are excited about the upcoming Astronomy Night, Open Day, Each Can Step Walk-a-Thon, and several excursions and incursions. These events are great opportunities for our students to learn, explore and have fun together.

We look forward to seeing our students and families participate in these activities and enjoy the experiences they offer. With so many engaging events planned, this term promises to be filled with memorable moments and community spirit. Let's work together to make the most of this exciting term ahead.

I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the teachers and staff at Eastwood Public School for their dedication and hard work in making sure our students experience all the great activities planned for Term 3. Their commitment goes beyond day-to-day teaching, as they consistently strive to create an engaging and enriching environment for our students. From organising special events to planning excursions and incursions, their efforts are truly commendable.

We are especially grateful for their willingness to donate their recess and lunch times to run extra-curricular activities. This dedication ensures that our students have access to a wide range of opportunities beyond the classroom. Their selfless contributions significantly enhance the educational experience for all our students and we are fortunate to have such a dedicated team.

I would like to extend my thanks to our wonderful P&C, who consistently assist the school in running big events. Their support is invaluable and greatly enhances the experiences of our students and the entire community. Whether it's organising activities, helping with logistics, or providing resources, their contributions make a significant difference. They are always in need of more volunteers, so if you can spare some time, please consider assisting where you can. Your help would be greatly appreciated and will contribute to the success of our school events.

Each Can Step Walk-a-thon – Wednesday, August 6

Due to the recent wet weather, our Each Can Step Walk-a-thon had to be postponed — but we’re very happy to announce the new date is Wednesday, August 6. This gives us even more time to work towards our target, and we’re already off to a great start! So far, we’ve raised over $37,000, which is a fantastic effort — well done to everyone who’s been involved so far.

We now have 582 registered fundraisers, with over 500 currently active. That means a huge number of our students are already doing their bit — and with over 700 students at Eastwood, if everyone raised just a small amount, we’d reach (and beat!) our goal in no time.

To put it in perspective, in 2023 our Colour Run raised $38,000, and in 2024 we raised over $29,000. Let’s make 2025 the standout year — and hit that $50,000 target together. Every dollar raised will go directly towards exciting new fixed playground equipment and a purpose-built sensory room that will make a real, lasting difference for our students.

When you’re visiting friends and family, please don’t forget to ask if they’d like to support our Walk-a-thon. Whether it’s $5 or $50, every contribution helps. If you haven’t already, help your child set up a fundraising profile and share it with friends, neighbours, and relatives.

Let’s keep the momentum going and make 2025 a year to remember for the Eastwood community.

To get started or make a donation, visit:

Thank you for your continued support — we can’t wait to see everyone stepping it out on Wednesday, August 6!

Each Can Step Walk-a-thon – Wednesday, August 6 – WE NEED YOU!!!!

🍉 Calling for Fruit Donations and Volunteers – Each Can Step Walk-a-thon 🍎

As part of our upcoming Each Can Step Walk-a-thon on Wednesday 6 August, we’re seeking support from our wonderful Eastwood Public School community to help keep our students refreshed and energised throughout the day.

We are asking families to consider donating fruit, specifically watermelon, apples, and oranges, which will be cut and served to students during the event. If you are able to donate, please contact Mrs Sarah Balestriere at sarah.balestriere@det.nsw.edu.au

We are also in need of parent volunteers on the day to assist with cutting up the fruit and handing it out to students. If you’re available to lend a hand, even for a short time, your help would be greatly appreciated. 🍎🍊🍉

Please email sarah.balestriere@det.nsw.edu.au if you’re able to donate fruit or volunteer your time.

With your help, we can make the Walk-a-thon an even more memorable and healthy event for our students. Thank you for your continued support!

Deputy Principal's Report

Celebrating National Principal's Day - Thank you Mr Kammerer

Today at Eastwood Public School, we celebrated National Principal’s Day — a special opportunity to recognise and thank our wonderful principal, Mr Michael Kammerer, for everything he does for our students, staff, and school community.

The children had a great time showing their appreciation through cards, drawings, and cheerful messages of thanks. Laughter and smiles filled the playground as students shared what they love most about their principal — from his friendly smile to his fun sense of humour and the way he always makes time to listen.

National Principal’s Day is a chance to acknowledge the dedication, leadership, and hard work principals do every single day. Mr Kammerer leads with care, vision, and a deep commitment to student success and wellbeing. Whether it’s guiding staff, greeting students at the gate, or helping with school events, his presence is felt in every part of our school.

Thank you, Mr Kammerer, for your unwavering support, your passion for education, and for always putting students first. We are lucky to have you leading Eastwood Public School!

Kindergarten 100 Days

On Tuesday, our Kindergarteners celebrated a major milestone — 100 days of school! It’s been 100 days filled with learning, growing, and joyful moments. To mark the occasion, students dressed up as if they were 100 years old, created festive crowns, and reflected on all they’ve accomplished so far. We’re incredibly proud of their hard work and can’t wait to see all they’ll achieve in the rest of the school year!

Stage 1 Happenings - 2B

2B have had a fantastic start to Term 3!

In English, we have been learning about perspective and argument with our mentor texts, 'The Wolf's Story' and 'The True Story of the Three Little Pigs'. In both these narratives, we have been hearing a different point of view to normal, but can we really trust a wolf?

We have been learning to write well-structured paragraphs that include creative wordplay to engage the reader. We also took on the character of the wolf during our questioning and hot seat activity where we had our own press conference! Safe to say we need to look out for these sneaky and rather paw-ful wolves!

In Maths we have been revising our knowledge of place value and applying this to using addition and subtraction strategies to solve a range of problems with 3- and 4-digit numbers!

Gymnastics lessons started on our first day back and we are loving developing our movement and balance skills with the help of our coaches.

Stage 2 Happenings - 4G

Last term, 4G enjoyed learning about Ned Kelly as a part of an English unit on 'argument and authority', and explored the question: Ned Kelly - Hero or Villain?  We wrote persuasive texts to argue our position and produced artwork of Ned Kelly based on works by Australian artist, Sidney Nolan.

This term, we are studying poetry by Australian authors in an English unit on 'imagery, symbol and connotation' and are keen to use knowledge gained to produce our own poetry.

Stage 3 Happenings - 6H

6H and KF have buddied up this year and have been thoroughly enjoying our weekly visits. This is an important time for our Kindergarten students to feel supported from their older peers and it’s a time for our 6H students to show that they are caring role models. 6H have assisted with reading, craft activities, just dance sessions and playing outside together.  We really value the time with our buddies and can’t wait for another semester of catch ups.

Education Week

Public Education Week is a time for all of us to come together and celebrate our commitment to Ignite your potential. Let’s take pride in being part of NSW public education and the endless and far-reaching achievements of our students and staff.

Ballet Update

Congratulations to the Senior and Junior Ballet groups on their successful auditions for the State Dance Festival, which will be held between 15 and 19 September at the Seymour Centre. We look forward to watching our students shine on stage once again!!!

Life Skills Go Wellbeing Update

Supporting Student Wellbeing at Eastwood – Life Skills GO Update

This year, Eastwood Public School has continued its whole-school implementation of Life Skills GO, a wellbeing platform that supports students to develop emotional literacy and self-awareness through daily check-ins and guided lessons.

Throughout Term 2, every student across the school checked in at least once, with many classes engaging daily. These check-ins give us valuable insight into how our students are feeling and whether they are ready to learn, helping staff respond with care and timely support.

Some key insights from Term 2 include:

  • Most students felt “Happy” – This remained the most commonly reported emotion.

  • Wednesdays were the most positive day for student readiness to learn.

  • There was an increase in students feeling “Content”, showing growth in positive self-regulation.

  • A small number of students indicated they were “Not Ready to Learn” due to emotional overload. This information helps our wellbeing and support teams intervene early.

Classes across the school continue to use the data to shape wellbeing conversations, reinforce emotional vocabulary, and foster a positive classroom culture. Our executive and teaching teams also use this information to track patterns and plan targeted support where needed.

We are proud of how our students are developing their emotional awareness and how Life Skills GO is helping create a safe, caring, and responsive learning environment.

We thank our families for their ongoing support in building a strong wellbeing foundation for all our learners.

Helping Your Child Learn to Regulate Their Emotions

At Eastwood Public School, we know that learning to manage emotions is just as important as learning to read or write. Emotional regulation helps children stay calm, solve problems, build positive friendships, and thrive in the classroom and playground.

Here are a few ways you can support your child at home:

Name the Emotion

Help your child build emotional vocabulary by naming what they’re feeling: “You look frustrated,” or “It seems like you’re feeling nervous.” When children can label their emotions, they’re better able to talk about them calmly.

Model Calm Responses

Children learn by watching. When things get stressful, take a deep breath and talk through your feelings. This shows your child that it’s okay to feel big emotions, and that there are healthy ways to manage them.

Pause and Breathe

Teach your child simple breathing strategies. Try “bubble breathing” (slow breath in, then out as if blowing a bubble), or count to 5 while breathing slowly. Practicing this when they’re calm helps them use it when they’re not.

Use a Calm-Down Plan

Many children benefit from having a “calm-down kit” or space at home with sensory tools, drawing materials, or a favourite book. This helps them reset and return to the situation with a clear head.

Talk it Through

Once calm, chat about what happened and what they could do differently next time. Praise their efforts to stay calm or repair a situation, even if it wasn’t perfect.

At school, we support students with strategies like brain breaks, regulation corners, Life Skills GO, and opportunities to reflect. When schools and families work together, we give children the tools they need to grow into resilient and confident learners.

If you’re ever concerned about your child’s emotional wellbeing, please reach out. We’re here to help.

The Importance of Reading to your Child

Reading aloud to your child is one of the simplest and most powerful things you can do to support their learning and development. It’s more than just a bedtime tradition — it lays the foundation for success in school and beyond.

What Australian Research Tells Us

  • School Performance Boost:
A study by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) found that children aged 4–5 who were read to daily had significantly higher cognitive and language skills than children who were not read to regularly. This included stronger vocabulary, comprehension, and numeracy outcomes (ABS, Childhood Education and Care, 2013).

  • Long-Term Academic Gains:
Research by Professor Guyonne Kalb from the University of Melbourne shows that children who are read to 3–5 days a week perform better at school by Year 3, with those read to every day doing even better. The benefits are similar to being six months ahead in reading and numeracy (Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research, 2013).

  • Closing the Equity Gap:
Shared reading at home has been shown to help narrow the achievement gap for students from diverse or disadvantaged backgrounds. It's a cost-free way to build strong literacy foundations before school even begins.

  • Social and Emotional Growth:
Reading with your child also promotes connection, empathy and emotional regulation. Australian literacy expert Mem Fox reminds us that “when we read to a child, we’re sending a pleasure message to the brain.” That pleasure creates positive attitudes toward reading for life.

How you can help at home

  • Read aloud daily — even just 10–15 minutes makes a difference.
  • Let your child choose the book — and don’t be afraid to repeat favourites.
  • Talk about the story: “What do you think will happen next?” or “How would you feel if that happened to you?”
  • Keep reading to your child even after they can read independently — older children benefit from rich vocabulary and storytelling too.

At Eastwood Public School, we’re committed to building strong readers from the very beginning. We encourage you to make reading part of your daily routine — it’s a gift that lasts a lifetime. Don’t forget to visit our Book Fair with your child and selects some books to share together

SRC - Beanie for Brain Cancer Fundraiser

Thank you for your incredible generosity and community spirit. We are thrilled to share that we raised $1,050 for the Beanie for Brain Cancer fundraiser!
This important initiative supports the Mark Hughes Foundation, a non-profit organisation dedicated to funding vital research into brain cancer — one of the most underfunded cancers in Australia. Your support is helping change that.
It was wonderful to see so many bright, colourful beanies warming heads and hearts on such a chilly day.
Thank you for making a real difference.
