Principal's Report

Welcome

As we reach the end of Term 2, I’ve been reflecting on both the big events and the everyday moments that make Eastwood Public School such a wonderful place to be. What truly stands out is the dedication of our staff — their commitment to meeting the educational, social, and emotional needs of our students is remarkable. Whether it’s inspiring young minds in the classroom or offering a reassuring smile and a band-aid at just the right time, their professionalism and care never go unnoticed.

To our amazing staff, thank you. Your hard work across the first half of the year has been exceptional. From engaging lessons to thoughtful guidance, and all those little extras you do each day, you help create an environment where our students can grow, learn, and thrive.

I’d also like to acknowledge our wonderful front office team. They are often the first friendly face or voice people encounter — answering phones, responding to questions and enquiries, and taking care of the sick and injured with kindness and efficiency. Their calm, caring approach helps keep our busy school running smoothly, and we’re so lucky to have them.

To our students — well done! Your enthusiasm and efforts this term have been fantastic. You’ve worked hard, and now it’s time for a well-earned break. I hope you enjoy these holidays — recharge, spend time with family and friends, and come back ready for what I’m sure will be an exciting Term 3. I’m very proud of your resilience and determination, and I can’t wait to see what you’ll achieve next.

And to our families, thank you for your ongoing support. Whether it’s helping with homework, encouraging your children, or joining us at school events, your involvement means so much. A special thank you to those who go that extra mile — whether it’s supporting the band, volunteering with the P&C, helping in the canteen, or simply taking the time to say a kind word to staff. Your generosity and commitment help make Eastwood the strong, caring community it is.

I wish everyone a safe, happy, and restful holiday. Enjoy the break and we look forward to seeing you all back for what promises to be a wonderful Term 3.

Staffing News

We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge Mrs Ann Collins, who is retiring at the end of this term. Ann has been a valued teacher at Eastwood Public School for many years and has been the welcoming face for students who have arrived at our school with little or no English. She has guided countless young learners in acquiring English and has provided them with the opportunity to thrive academically. We sincerely thank Ann for her dedication and hard work, and we wish her all the very best for a happy and fulfilling retirement.

We would also like to let our community know that Mrs Gloria Ryu will be temporarily leaving Eastwood Public School as she takes the opportunity to explore the world and embrace new experiences on the global stage. Mrs Ryu will be finishing up at the end of Week 1, Term 3, and we are pleased to welcome Mr Joshua Bowman, who will be taking over 2R for the remainder of the year.

Staff Development Day

On Monday, 21 July 2025, Eastwood Public School will hold a Staff Development Day. This is a designated student-free day, allowing our staff to engage in targeted professional learning and collaborative planning to ensure a strong start to Term 3.

Aligned with the NSW Department of Education’s Professional Learning Policy, the day will focus on developing high-quality teaching programs, reflecting on student data, and aligning our work with the school’s strategic directions. This collaborative planning supports continuous improvement in teaching practice and student outcomes.

In addition to curriculum planning, staff will undertake mandatory First Aid and CPR training, as required by the Department. This training ensures our team is equipped to respond effectively in emergencies, reinforcing our commitment to student safety.

We appreciate your understanding and support as we invest in the professional development of our staff, ultimately enhancing the educational experience for all students.

School Communication Platform Change

We wish to inform our school community that from the beginning of Term 3, Eastwood Public School will no longer be using Schoolzine’s Szapp for communication. Instead, we will transition to School Bytes—the same platform currently used for payments and permission notes.

The last day messages will be sent via Szapp will be the final day of Term 2. From Term 3 onward, all school communication will be sent through School Bytes.

To ensure a smooth transition and to stay up to date with important school information, please download the School Bytes app before the start of Term 3.

Thank you for your support as we move to a more streamlined communication platform.

A Night to Remember – North Sydney Ballet Dance Festival

We are incredibly proud of our students who dazzled on stage at the North Sydney Ballet Dance Festival this week. Their poise, elegance, and joy were an absolute delight to witness — they truly brought the stage to life. A special thank you must go to our dedicated staff, Ms Gasparre and Ms Boulas, whose incredible work behind the scenes made this performance possible. From choreography and costume coordination to late-night rehearsals and backstage support, they gave so much of their time and talent to ensure the students had an unforgettable experience. They stayed until 9:30pm on both performance nights, ensuring every dancer felt confident, calm, and ready to shine.

We’re also deeply grateful to our wonderful parent community. Thank you for making arrangements to bring your children to the venue and supporting them in this amazing opportunity. Your commitment means so much and helped create lasting memories for all involved.

And just when we thought the evening couldn’t be more special, a surprise appearance from a well-known guest on Wednesday night created quite the buzz — phones out, smiles wide, and excitement all around.

Thank you again to everyone who played a part in this wonderful experience. We are so lucky to have such passionate students, staff, and families in our Eastwood community.

Thank you to the families of the dancers for your support, with a special mention to Cathy Lai for generously volunteering her time to braid hair for the junior dancers.

Enjoy a few moments from this magical night captured in the photos below.

Each Can Step Walk-a-thon – Wednesday, August 6

Due to the recent wet weather, our Each Can Step Walk-a-thon had to be postponed — but we’re very happy to announce the new date is Wednesday, August 6. This gives us even more time to work towards our target, and we’re already off to a great start! So far, we’ve raised over $37,000, which is a fantastic effort — well done to everyone who’s been involved so far.

We now have 582 registered fundraisers, with over 500 currently active. That means a huge number of our students are already doing their bit — and with over 700 students at Eastwood, if everyone raised just a small amount, we’d reach (and beat!) our goal in no time.

To put it in perspective, in 2023 our Colour Run raised $38,000, and in 2024 we raised over $29,000. Let’s make 2025 the standout year — and hit that $50,000 target together. Every dollar raised will go directly towards exciting new fixed playground equipment and a purpose-built sensory room that will make a real, lasting difference for our students.

Over the holiday break, when you’re visiting friends and family, please don’t forget to ask if they’d like to support our Walk-a-thon. Whether it’s $5 or $50, every contribution helps. If you haven’t already, help your child set up a fundraising profile and share it with friends, neighbours, and relatives.

Let’s keep the momentum going and make 2025 a year to remember for the Eastwood community.

To get started or make a donation, visit:

Thank you for your continued support — we can’t wait to see everyone stepping it out on Wednesday, August 6!

Fixed Equipment

We’re excited to share that our new fixed playground equipment will be installed over the holiday break! This has been a long time coming, and we’re thrilled that our students will soon have this fantastic new addition to enjoy.

The installation is expected to take 4–5 weeks to complete, depending on the weather. We appreciate everyone’s support and patience as this work is carried out — we know it will be well worth the wait!

This new equipment will provide wonderful opportunities for play, fitness, and fun, and we can’t wait to see our students making the most of it once it’s ready.

Thank you again for your ongoing support in helping to make this project a reality!

Reports

Semester 1 reports are now available on the SENTRAL Parent Portal

The school uses the A to E grade scale summarises the standard (or quality) of achievement associated with each grade.

The scale describes:

  • the depth of knowledge and understanding and
  • the range of skills that students working at that standard typically show.

Grades are given for individual achievement. Students will get the grade that best matches the standard of their achievement.

Grade

A

The student has an extensive knowledge and understanding of the content and can

readily apply this knowledge. In addition, the student has achieved a very high

level of competence in the processes and skills and can apply these skills to new

situations.

B

The student has a thorough knowledge and understanding of the content and a high

level of competence in the processes and skills. In addition, the student is able to apply this knowledge and these skills to most situations.

C

The student has a sound knowledge and understanding of the main areas of content and has achieved an adequate level of competence in the processes and skills.

D

The student has a basic knowledge and understanding of the content and has

achieved a limited level of competence in the processes and skills.

E

The student has an elementary knowledge and understanding in few areas of the

content and has achieved very limited competence in some of the processes and skills.

Teachers make professional on-balance judgements to decide which grade description best matches the standards their students have achieved at a particular point-in-time

Reports and EAL/D (English as an additional language or dialect) comment.

This semester, Eastwood Public School will continue to include an EaLD comment in reports for those students whose families speak another language than English at home. At Eastwood Public School we have a high percentage of NESB (Non-English-Speaking Background) families, approximately 90% and the Policy Standards for the Curriculum Planning and Programming, Assessing and Reporting to Parents K-12 outlines the importance of reporting on EAL/D student progress in learning to parents.

In addition to standard reporting requirements for all students, reports for K-10 EAL/D students should include the following information:

  • an overall EAL/D Learning Progression phase,
  • how English language learning has been supported, and
  • how English language learning has progressed.

Who are EAL/D learners:

Overseas and Australian-born students whose first language is a language or dialect other than English and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students whose first language is an Indigenous language, including traditional language, creoles and related varieties, or Aboriginal English. Many EAL/D students have strong skills and knowledge in their home language, however, to learn in English, EAL/D students require an appropriate teaching and learning environment which builds English language skills to achieve academic success.

At Eastwood Public School we have specialist EAL/D teachers who design targeted, curriculum-based English language instruction for EAL/D students and assist in the delivery of teaching programs that meet students’ particular English language learning needs. In supporting whole school programs and initiatives, EAL/D teachers focus on the English language and literacy learning of EAL/D students relative to the needs of the learner and to curriculum outcomes. This is achieved through co-designed teaching programs.

Second Language Acquisition:

Learning a new language happens over time and in stages. The stages of second language acquisition are similar to the stages of first language acquisition. Learning a second language involves the acquisition of a complex communication system, composed of the interrelating linguistic elements of communication, social usage, meanings, structures, vocabulary, word formation and sounds. The development of oral fluency begins with preproduction moving to early production, speech emergence, intermediate fluency and ending with advanced fluency. Reaching this stage may take many years of learning the language.

Average Time to Progress Through the EAL/D Learning Progression Phases:

It is very possible that a student may receive a Sound, High or Outstanding in English, but still receive an Emerging, Developing or Consolidating Phase in the EaLD report section. This is quite common and nothing to be concerned about. As you can see from the previous table, English language proficiency takes a substantial amount of time and EaLD progressions are based on ESL scales which have variations to the English syllabus.

Facebook

Eastwood Public School has so much to be proud of—and we love celebrating the talents, achievements, and spirit of our students with our community. To showcase the many wonderful things happening across the school, we regularly post photos and highlights on the Eastwood Public School Facebook page.

This page is dedicated to celebrating our students—whether it’s classroom creativity, sporting achievements, performances, or special events. It’s not intended for day-to-day school communication or distributing notes, but rather as a place to share and acknowledge the amazing things happening at Eastwood.

We invite all families to take a look and join us in recognising the efforts of our students and staff.

Kindergarten Happenings

Kindergarten's Wild Adventure at Sydney Zoo!

Earlier this term, our Kindergarten students enjoyed a fantastic excursion to Sydney Zoo. It was a day full of excitement, curiosity, and hands-on learning about the amazing animals that share our planet.

Students saw a wide variety of animals, including rhinos, kangaroos, giraffes, and elephants. One of the highlights of the day was getting to pat a lizard and a snake—a brave and exciting moment for many!

The visit supported their classroom learning about living things and their needs, bringing the topic to life in the most memorable way.

A big thank you to our wonderful teachers and parent helpers who supported the day—it was a great success and a highlight of the term for our youngest learners!

100 Days of Kindergarten

Kindergarten will be celebrating 100 days of school on Tuesday 29th July 2025. The students will be participating in a range of exciting activities on this day. The activities will take place in Kindergarten classrooms. Students need to bring their crunch and sip, recess, lunch and hat as normal.

On this special day, we will also be having a teddy bears picnic at lunch time. The children are encouraged to bring along a teddy to cuddle while eating their lunch.

Students can wear mufti on the day, no gold coin donation necessary. Students are encouraged to dress as a 100 year old to school and celebrate this wonderful occasion. A few examples are shown below, and other ideas and inspiration can be found on Pinterest or Google images.

Stage 1 Happenings - 2R

This week, 2R has been exploring positional language such as above, below, between, beside, and next to through a creative and cultural lens. Students combined their learning in mathematics with visual arts by creating artworks inspired by Aboriginal symbols and storytelling. Using these symbols, they gave directions and described the placement of different elements in their artwork using positional terms.

Stage 2 Happenings - 4P

Bold Strokes and Balancing Acts

We are pleased to share some highlights from 4P!

Earlier this year we visited the Art Gallery of NSW to participate in a day of art appreciation and art making. We used our collaborative problem-solving skills to make some striking wearables and large-scale paintings.

In gymnastics this term we worked on our fundamental movement skills, balance, and strength in weekly high energy lessons with our coaches. Can you spot a motorbike, pencil, tuck or a Mr T in the pictures below?

In English we have been exploring how authors use the textual concepts of argument and authority to persuade readers. Do you think Ned Kelly is a criminal or a hero? We think we might be able to change your mind!

Mr Perrett and 4P

Confident Voices Take the Spotlight

The Stage 2 final of the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition was held earlier this term. Our adjudicators, Mr Kammerer and Mrs Balestriere, were delighted with the overall quality of the speeches and the confidence of the speakers.

Congratulations to our Stage 2 champion, Sherrie from 4S, and our Stage 2 runner-up, Svojas in 4P.

Sherrie and Svojas proudly represented EPS at the local final at Ngarala Public School earlier this term.

Congratulations to all Stage 2 MPPS finalists!

Young Word Wizards Shine

After battling it out with 14 other contestants, our 2025 Spelling Bee champions have been crowned at EPS!

Congratulations to our Stage 2 winner, Elaine from 3CS, and our Stage 2 runner-up, Isabella from 4G.

Elaine will be representing Eastwood Public School at the regional final in Term 3.

Congratulations to all of the students who represented their class at the Stage 2 final!

Stage 3 Happenings - 6NL

So far this term has been amazing. At the start of the term we went to camp and we drove all the way to Canberra. We went to Questacon and then we went to both of the Parliament houses and we learnt about how the laws work. We learnt the difference between the Senate Room (the red room) and the House of Representatives (the green room). We visited  the art museum where we saw all of the different art works and learnt the meaning behind them and then we did many more things.

This term we also read about a book named ‘Rabbit, Soldier, Angel, Thief’ by Katrina Nannestad. It is a very interesting novel. It is about a Russian boy who fought in World War 2. His country is at war with Germany. He experienced a lot during the war and it is a sad story.

By Izzy 6NL

This term has been quite enjoyable for the Year 6’s. We have had incursions, excursions and many fun projects to do as a class and as a whole grade. Some highlights of things I enjoyed this year would be our tech incursion and our sustainability project that we have worked on throughout the whole term. One of my favourite highlights from this term would be the tech incursion we had. Three people from a tech company came to our school and gave us a very fun and enjoyable time while teaching us about tech and coding. We even got to do some coding and make our own little toy with cardboard that could make sounds and flash lights on and off.

Another thing that has been quite enjoyable is our ‘Sustainability' project’ in science. For this whole term we have studied sustainability for our science project and we even had some chances to build a sustainable farm in Minecraft. Our class have enjoyed this term a lot and hope to have the same fun and enjoyable experience in the future!

By Eva 6NL

Knitting Club

It’s been an exciting and interesting start to the Knitting Club. I enjoy it very much. I have also learned how to crochet a chain and other stitches. It’s fun to learn something new with my friends so we can explore our creativity. I want to say thanks to Mr Kammerer for buying our supplies and thank you to Ms Nguyen for giving up her time to teach us.

By Samira 6NL

I enjoy learning how to knit because it is challenging and exciting. Learning new things makes it fun. It is fun to learn how to knit because you never know what you could make, like you could make a teddy bear for someone and it can be a birthday present. And that is why I like Knitting and Crochet Club.

Mandarin Matters

Kindergarten - Learning Through Play!

Our kindy learners dived into Mandarin basics through games.

They’ve been mastering character strokes (笔画) and learning oral expressions—because fun fuels real learning!

Year 2 & Year 3 – Building Strong Foundations

Our Year 2 and Year 3 students continued to grow in confidence as they expanded their vocabulary, practiced conversations, and strengthened their writing skills.

Step by step, they’re building a solid foundation in Mandarin that will support their future learning.

Year 4 - Little Masterchefs!

Our Year 4 students embarked on a flavorful journey learning to cook ‘Egg Fried Rice (蛋炒饭)’!

They explored ingredients, kitchen tools, and mastered the Chinese characters behind the dish—combining culinary fun with language learning.

Chinese Club

Behind the scenes, our dedicated Chinese Club students are rehearsing for a performance next term at the Open Day Education Week Expo - Cultural Languages Live Site.

Stay tuned for a delightful showcase!

🧠Life Skills GO Check-in Update - Term 2 Wrap-Up

As we conclude Term 2, we’d like to share the final snapshot from our Life Skills GO wellbeing check-ins for Weeks 9 and 10.

We’re proud to report that 686 out of 699 students checked in at least once over the fortnight, reflecting our school’s ongoing commitment to student wellbeing and emotional awareness.

🌟 Highlights:

  • “Happy” was the most reported emotion during this period.
  • Most students felt “Ready to Learn”, maintaining a positive trend across the term.
  • Increased classroom engagement was noted, with 18% of Year 4 students reporting they were happy to be in the classroom (up from the usual 15%).
  • Year 2 students showed a slight increase in Online engagement, rising from 5% to 6%

🚩 Areas to Watch:

  • Compared to the previous fortnight, the number of students feeling Happy, Calm, Tired, Content, and Sad all decreased, which may reflect end-of-term fatigue or seasonal factors.

📅 Daily Trends:

We continue to monitor emotional patterns across the week to ensure early support for students who may struggle on specific days.

As we move into the holiday break, we encourage families to check in with their children and use the holidays to rest, recharge, and reconnect. Thank you for supporting our whole-school approach to student wellbeing. We look forward to building on this momentum in Term 3.

Athletics Carnival

This Term we were a little unlucky with the weather on our scheduled Athletics carnival day as it was a very dreary and cold wet day. Thankfully our back up day was an absolute cracker! The sun was shining, the sky was bright blue and the participation numbers kept growing for each event which is fantastic. We had a great day at Dunbar Park where we held the running events and Long Jump. We were also able to run our House relays which were fun to watch.

The runners with the fastest final times will be representing our school in the Ryde Zone Athletics carnival next Term.

Our field events day at school finished off the carnival. It was most exciting to see Dora break the Junior Girls High jump record with a leap of 1.30 - beating the old record by 5cm!!

Many thanks must go to the House Captains and vice Captains who officiated on the High Jump, shot Put and Discus. The teachers simply would not have been able to run these events without the Year 6 students. They did a fantastic job as judges on the bar, recording results, helping measure distance etc.

Congratulations to all our participants over each of the Athletics carnivals.

Ribbons will be handed out at an assembly early next term.

Our Winter season has been fantastic so far and luckily the rain has stayed away for majority of the games.

We have a few teams within the top 4 positions and if that stays the same next term we will be participating in finals!

Have a safe and active holiday break.
