Principal's Report
As the proud principal of Eastwood Public School, I am continually inspired by the achievements and enthusiasm of our wonderful students. This term has been a showcase of their dedication, creativity, and spirit. I am excited to share some of the highlights and acknowledge the contributions that have made this term so memorable.
We began the term with a lively Book Fair that sparked excitement among our students. This event allowed them to delve into a variety of books, explore different genres, and discover new favourite reads. It was heartening to see so many students engaging with literature and developing a love for reading. Following this, we hosted Illustrator Visits where our children had the opportunity to meet a talented artist and express their own artistic abilities. The enthusiasm and creativity demonstrated by our students were truly impressive.
Our school leaders had the valuable opportunity to visit the Mayoral Office, where they engaged with local issues and presented their views on various community matters. The discussions and votes they participated in highlighted their commitment to making a difference and their growing understanding of civic responsibilities.
The Open Day was a fantastic celebration of our school community. It was a day filled with musical performances, classroom tours, and a picnic lunch that brought together students, families, and staff. The positive atmosphere and strong sense of community spirit were evident throughout the day, making it a truly enjoyable and successful event. We were particularly proud of the diverse range of performances that showcased our students' talents. The Korean Cup Group captivated the audience with their vibrant traditional dance and music, while our dancers impressed everyone with their elegant routines. Individual musicians also shone brightly, with students playing various instruments to create beautiful and memorable performances. Their dedication and hard work were evident, and their performances added a special touch to the day.
Year 3 and 4 students embarked on an educational excursion to Gibberagong, where they explored and learned about our Indigenous heritage. This experience provided them with a deeper understanding of our cultural history and fostered a greater appreciation for the rich heritage of our land. It was an enriching experience that complemented their classroom learning.
Our Kindergarten, Year 1, and Year 2 students have been participating in the Fit Futures program, which focuses on promoting health and fitness. Through engaging activities and exercises, they are learning the importance of a healthy lifestyle in a fun and interactive way. The program has been well-received and is contributing to their overall well-being.
The choir’s performance at the Festival of Choral Music at the Opera House was nothing short of spectacular. The dedication and talent of our students were on full display, and their performance was met with rave reviews. It was a memorable experience that showcased their hard work and musical abilities.
During Science Week, students participated in the Bricks for Kids LEGO incursion, where they engaged in hands-on activities that highlighted their creativity and problem-solving skills. This event was a great way to celebrate science and encourage students to explore new interests.
Our Astronomy Night was a standout event, featuring captivating space photography, an immersive Planetarium experience, and an extraordinary sausage sizzle cooked by the renowned BBQ chef, who is celebrated not just locally but also internationally for his exceptional grilling skills. His culinary expertise added a unique touch to the evening, making the food a memorable highlight. The night was filled with fun, learning and vibrant community energy, and it was wonderful to see so many families coming together to enjoy the event
We also conducted Swim School for Years 2 and 3, focusing on water safety and essential swimming skills. This program is crucial in ensuring that our students are prepared and confident in and around water, and the positive feedback from participants and parents alike has been encouraging.
Our involvement in the Ryde Zone Athletics Carnival was notable, with six of our students qualifying for the Regional Athletics Carnival. Their hard work and determination were commendable, and we are proud of their achievements. Additionally, the Public Speaking finals provided an opportunity for one of our students to shine, culminating in a well-deserved victory.
Weekly PSSA sessions continue to offer our students valuable experiences in various sports, fostering teamwork and good sportsmanship. These sessions are instrumental in helping students develop new skills and an appreciation for physical activity.
Looking ahead, we have several exciting events on the horizon. The State Dance Festival will showcase our talented Ballet Group, and our choir will perform at the Town Hall, highlighting their ongoing commitment to musical excellence. Years 5 and 6 will be heading to the 'Great Aussie Bush Camp,' where they will experience outdoor adventures and build camaraderie. Additionally, Year 6 will be organizing their annual Mini Fete, a fundraising event that promises to be both enjoyable and fun.
I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all our students for their outstanding efforts and contributions. Their enthusiasm, dedication, and hard work make our school a vibrant and dynamic place. It is your spirit that truly enriches our school community.
A special note of gratitude goes to our exceptional teachers, who tirelessly dedicate their time and energy to support our students. Their commitment to providing quality education and enriching experiences is greatly appreciated. The success of our various programs and events is a direct result of your dedication and passion.
Thank you once again to everyone for their continued support and contributions. We look forward to more exciting events and achievements in the months to come.
For all the photos of these great events, please visit our Facebook site, which is continually updated.

Early Arrivals – Gates open at 8:40am
I am writing to express my concern regarding the large number of students being left at the school gate before 8:40 a.m. Please be aware that there are no teachers on duty before this time, and I am concerned for the safety of students left unattended. If students are left at the gate before 8:40 a.m., the school will contact parents and request that they either collect their child or wait with them until school begins. If this becomes a recurring issue, we will have no choice but to discuss the matter further with the parents involved. Your cooperation in ensuring that your children arrive at school from 8:40 a.m. onwards is greatly appreciated and essential for their safety.
Late Arrivals – Lessons begin 9:10am
The expectation is that all students arrive at school on time, before 9:10 am. A parent SHOULD accompany the child to the front office if the child is late. At the beginning of Term 3, we will be closely monitoring the situation, and any student who is continually late may receive a phone call. If a pattern emerges, the Home and School Liaison Officer (HSLO) will be called to investigate.
We understand it's cold, but arriving late to school causes significant disruptions to the student's learning experience. Missing the introductions of lessons makes it challenging for students to catch up with the rest of the class. This can lead to gaps in understanding and hinder academic progress. To ensure all students start their day on the right foot, the Senior Executive will be at the gates from 9:10 am each morning starting from Term 3 to monitor late arrivals. Our goal is to support every student in having a successful and uninterrupted educational journey.
Most late arrivals are marked as ‘Unjustified Absences’ and are recorded on the student’s ‘Progress Report’, semesterly.
New Build
We are thrilled to report that the new build at Eastwood Public School is progressing rapidly. The internal work is nearly finished, and the external facade is looking impressive. The builders are now waiting on the arrival of the oriental gold louvers, which will be the final piece of the construction. Once these are installed, the building will be complete and ready for use.
We are excited to announce that students will be moving into the new building in Term 4. This is a significant milestone for our school, and we can’t wait to share this fantastic new space with our students and staff. To give you a glimpse of the progress, we will be posting pictures in our next newsletter. Stay tuned for more updates!
Thank you, Michael Kammerer, Principal

Kinder Matters: KA
In our math lessons, KA has been exploring different types of patterns. They've been learning how patterns can repeat and understanding how some patterns can increase or decrease. It's been exciting to see them grasp these concepts and apply them in various ways!
Stage 1 Happenings: 2BJ
Term 3 has been incredibly busy and exciting for Year 2. Currently we are tired but thrilled by our daily swimming lessons at Lane Cove Aquatic Centre. Many of us were reluctant to put our head under the water to blow bubbles! Now, we are all swimming like little fish and having fun at the same time!
We are very grateful that we can learn this life skill that is so very important for everyone living in Australia. With so many drownings every summer, we are lucky to have learnt many survival skills so that we can to play in and around water safely.
Stage 3 Happenings: 6L
This term Year 6 have been studying electricity in Science. In particular, we have learnt about simple circuits and how to wire these in series and parallel. A group project that we are currently undertaking aims at designing a studio apartment which will showcase our knowledge of circuitry. Students are using lights, wires, switches and batteries to create a functioning model of their apartment. Here is an example created by Tyler from 6L.
Year 6 have also been rapidly preparing for the annual mini fete, which will be held in week 10. Students have been making their stalls, organising prizes and designing posters and art for the event. It is an exciting time for Year 6 as we strive to create and run the ‘the best mini fete ever’!! Here are some photos of our work in progress..

Year 6 Mini Fete
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
Year 6 students are excited to announce that the Mini Fete will be held on Wednesday 25th September. The Year 6 students will be managing stalls to raise money for their end of year farewell.
Stalls include:
- Art and Craft – e.g. face painting, hair spray and badge making
- Games – e.g. basketball, throwing games and sponge throw
- Food stalls - popcorn, ice-cream, cupcakes, jelly and spider drinks
and much more…
This year we are selling tokens to students BEFORE Fete day. These tokens will be used on the day instead of money. Your child’s name will be written on the tokens and they will be delivered to your child’s class on the day of the fete. Tokens must be purchased online and are not for sale at the office. A token has the equivalent value of 50 cents and must be spent on the day of the fete.
Examples of 1 token stalls include | Ring toss, Paper Plane Competition, Mini Games |
Examples of 2 token stalls include | Escape Room, Target Shooting, Hair Spray |
Example of 4 token stalls include | Spider Drinks, Cup-Cakes |
$5 worth of tokens will allow your child to attend approximately 3 stalls and purchase 1 item of food or drink. However, as the fete runs for an hour we recommended a minimum of $10 to allow your child to enjoy the full fete experience.
Thank you for supporting our Year 6 students.
Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition - Regional Finals
Congratulations to Kayla from 5L for her outstanding achievement in securing 1st place at the Regional Final Championship of the 2024 Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition held at 'The Arts Unit' in Lewisham!
Kayla impressed the judges with her prepared speech on 'Representations' and confidently delivered an exceptional impromptu speech on 'Paying Attention,' which she thoughtfully linked to environmental issues.
We are thrilled to announce that Kayla will be competing in the state finals on Wednesday, 13th November, at the NSW Teachers Federation Conference Centre. This will be her second time competing at the state level, and we are incredibly proud of her dedication and hard work in preparing for this competition.
Well done, Kayla! Your commitment and excellence are truly inspiring
Changes to the Platinum Level in Our Award System
At Eastwood Public School, we are committed to fostering the social-emotional skills that contribute to our students' success. Our award system is aligned with the "You Can Do It" Program, which emphasises five key skills: Confidence, Persistence, Organisation, Getting Along, and Resilience. Students work hard to collect Eastwood Keys, which recognise their progress in these areas.
As a reminder, students achieve different levels based on the number of Keys they collect:
- Bronze Level: 5 Keys
- Silver Level: Bronze Level plus 10 additional Keys
- Gold Level: Silver Level plus 15 additional Keys
But what happens after Gold? Introducing the New Platinum Level
Once students have reached the Gold Level, they are eligible to work on their Platinum Checklist. This checklist includes a series of positive behaviours that align with our school-wide expectations of being Safe, Respectful, and Engaged. Students working towards Platinum will go through the checklist and mark off behaviours they believe they have achieved. This process is done in consultation with their teacher to ensure that they meet the criteria.
Students who successfully complete their Platinum Checklist will be awarded a Platinum medal at a special assembly at the end of Term 4. We are excited to see our students continue to strive for excellence and embody the values that make our school community strong.
Excellence in the Arts - Whole School Concert on November 20 November
We are thrilled to announce our upcoming "Excellence in the Arts" whole-school concert, which will take place on 20 November at the Chatswood Concourse. This special event is an opportunity for our students to showcase the skills and talents they have been developing throughout the year in their music lessons.
Every student has been hard at work practising and perfecting their performance piece, and they are eager to share their progress with you. In addition to class performances, the concert will feature special presentations from our ballet group and cultural language groups, highlighting the diversity and creativity within our school community.
We look forward to celebrating the arts together and seeing our students shine on stage. Be sure to mark your calendars for this exciting event!

SASS Recognition Week: 26-30 August
This week, we celebrated the amazing work of our admin team, Student Learning Support Officers and our General Assistant. The Eastwood SASS team are the backbone to our daily operations and are an amazing group of people to work with. Each day, our students and staff are grateful for their dedication and support, so as a token of our gratitude, we arranged surprises on a daily basis, with two of our student leaders, writing and presenting speeches. Please read the speeches below:
I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to each member of the SLSO (Student Learning Support Officer) team for your unwavering dedication and invaluable support to our school community. Your diligent work and dedication- from supporting students in the classroom to providing essential assistance, ensures that our school runs smoothly and that students like myself, feel supported every day. Your efforts often go unnoticed, yet they are the backbone of our daily operations and we are truly fortunate to have such a committed and caring team. Thank you for your tireless contributions that not only keep our school organised but also make it a welcoming and efficient place for all. Once again, thank you for all your dedication and contributions to make our school a better place for everyone.
Silver- Vice Captain
SASS week is when we appreciate the people who don’t necessarily teach but make the school run smoothly. SASS stands for School Administrative Support Staff. We are lucky to have such a talented SASS staff at Eastwood Public School. The SLSO or student learning support officers help assist classroom activities, support students in class and are always offering support to anyone in need. Without them, the school would not function properly. The SLSO’s are only one of the amazing SASS staff. The SASS team, including the Admin team at the front office and the General Assistant, are unsung heroes in our school. This is why we celebrate SASS week to recognise and appreciate the amazing team which runs the school.

Happy Literacy and Numeracy week!
This week we are celebrating all the wonderful work that is happening in classrooms from Kindy through to Year 6. I have been amazed at the SLAM Poems that year 5 students have written and presented as part of their English unit.
The new curriculum has brought some changes to the way we teach and learn English and mathematics. Students are required to reason, justify, give their opinion and make connections to the world around them. In mathematics, students are required to use a variety of strategies to solve problems and then to justify their choices. In English, students are required to delve deep into the themes presented in their focus book study and give reasons why the author chose the language, even as simple as word choice.
Ask your child what activity they did in maths today - what did they have to do, why did they have to do it and what was the outcome? Ask your child to tell you about the book they are studying in class. Is it informative, persuasive or imaginative? How do they know it is informative, persuasive or imaginative? Who is the author? Is there a main character? How does the author describe the character?
Please find below, Literacy and Numeracy activities you could do at home with your child. Click here to access the links and QR codes.

Music
Senior Choir Happenings
This year the Senior Choir was privileged to be able to take part in the Arts Unit's Festival of Choral Music concert. The first half of the year was very busy learning and perfecting the excellent repertoire of songs in preparation for our performance at the Opera House with other public school choirs, orchestras and stage bands made up of many talented student musicians.
Prior to our concert, the EPS Senior Choir attended a rehearsal in the city, the first time we were able to sing with all the other students who would be performing with us. We had a great day and our students represented EPS with pride.
On the 14th of August, the concert day had finally arrived. The rain and grey clouds were a bit dreary but they couldn't dampen our spirits and soaring voices. We travelled into the city in the morning to attend a daytime rehearsal before the concert in the evening. One of the highlights was spotting the Opera House seal during the break! We got to have dinner with our parents and then reconvened to get ready for the show! Our students had the parent paparazzi snapping lots of final photos before they went in to take their seats!
Some of the wonderful performance pieces included 'Something Told the Wild Geese', 'The Moon' and Pink's 'Cover Me In Sunshine'. We were also very lucky to be performing on the same night as Stella G (5L) and her older sister and past EPS student Sherry G, who were part of the combined NSW Public Schools Orchestra. Also performing on the same night was Christopher Y (6G) whose instrumental group, the Inuaria Trio, masterfully performed 'Piano Trio Op 32 Finale' by Arensky. EPS truly is overflowing with talent!
Mrs Forster and Ms Bennett were very proud of how all of our students behaved and applied themselves both in the leadup to the concert, and for the final performance. It was a real thrill getting to perform in such a prestigious venue and was a night we won't soon forget.
