Principal's Report

As the proud principal of Eastwood Public School, I am continually inspired by the achievements and enthusiasm of our students, and by the dedication and time our teachers so generously give to create these opportunities. This term has been a showcase of commitment, creativity, and spirit across our school community. I am pleased to share some of the highlights that have made this term so memorable.

At some stages it felt like we were all going to float away with the amount of rain we’ve had recently. A big thank you to our community for your understanding and patience during the downpours — your support kept things moving even when it felt like we might need canoes to get to school!

The term began with a lively Book Fair, encouraging students to explore a wide range of literature and discover new favourites. Illustrator Visits followed, giving students the opportunity to meet a professional artist and explore the creative process in depth.

Our Annual Book Parade saw students arrive in brilliant costumes, enthusiastically bringing their favourite characters to life. Adding extra flair, three dashing, swashbuckling executives joined in, looking courageous and ready to take on any wrongdoers.

We held our first Gold Assembly, where students who had achieved their Gold Certificates were recognised in front of their families. The assembly also included the presentation of SRC badges, Environmental Club badges, ten-pin bowling certificates, and a wide range of other awards, making it a significant celebration of achievement across the school.

Our school leaders visited the Mayoral Office, where they discussed community issues, shared their views, and learned more about civic responsibility. Their participation reflected maturity and engagement with the wider community.

Open Day brought our community together with musical performances, classroom tours, and a picnic lunch. Highlights included the colourful Korean Cup Group, accomplished dance routines, and instrumental soloists. A big thank you goes to our community for the generous donations of delicious treats, and to the volunteers who sold the produce to the masses.

Stage 1 students travelled to Rouse Hill to experience what school life was like many years ago. The excursion provided insight into history through hands-on activities and traditional games.

Kindergarten to Year 2 students participated in the Fit Futures program, which promoted health, fitness, and teamwork through structured activities. This program has built both physical skills and positive attitudes toward active lifestyles.

Music was a strong focus this term. The choir performed at the Festival of Choral Music at the Opera House, while students also represented Eastwood at the Festival of Instrumental Music (FOIM) on the same stage. Both performances were significant opportunities to showcase student talent at a state level.

Astronomy Night was another standout, featuring the Planetarium experience and space photography. At the BBQ, the greatest BBQ chef known was at the helm, serving tasty sausages all evening and adding to the atmosphere of the night.

In sport, 10 Eastwood students qualified for the Regional Athletics Carnival following strong performances at the Ryde Zone Carnival. Our debating teams competed strongly in the local competition, displaying great teamwork, sportsmanship, and school spirit throughout each round. We also competed in the Regional Spelling Bee finals, where one of our students achieved the remarkable milestone of progressing to the State Final — quite an achievement.

Looking ahead, the Ballet Group will perform at the State Dance Festival, showcasing the talent and hard work that has gone into their rehearsals. Our choir will sing at Town Hall, an exciting opportunity to perform in such a historic venue. Years 2 and 3 will also continue their Swim School program, building further confidence in the pool while strengthening their water safety skills. These events promise to round out the year with energy, pride, and plenty for our students to look forward to.

I extend my thanks to our students for their efforts and achievements, and to our dedicated teachers for providing such valuable learning opportunities. The strength of our community continues to enrich the life of our school.

Celebrating SASS Week

Celebrating SASS Week - Week 7, Beginning September 1

Next week we celebrate School Administrative and Support Staff (SASS) Week – a time to recognise and thank the dedicated team of people who keep Eastwood Public School running so smoothly every day. Our SASS team are the quiet achievers who make an enormous difference to the lives of our students, families, and staff.

Below, we proudly acknowledge our amazing team:

  • Ms J. Owen – Staff Assistance Officer

Our administration team are the first point of contact for families and visitors, offering a warm welcome and ensuring the smooth day-to-day running of the school office. From managing finances, coordinating staffing, and handling enrolments, to supporting communication and organising countless tasks behind the scenes, they are the heartbeat of our school. Their professionalism, efficiency, and kindness ensure that staff, parents, and students are supported at every step.

Student Learning Support Officers (SLSOs)

  • Mrs A. Brayshaw
  • Mrs J. Willott

From maintaining equipment to managing repairs, setting up spaces for events, and caring for our outdoor areas, his work keeps the school looking its best and running efficiently. His efforts, often behind the scenes, are noticed and deeply appreciated by the entire school community.

A Heartfelt Thank You

On behalf of the entire Eastwood Public School community, we say thank you to our SASS team. Their expertise, hard work, and kindness ensure our school is a place where staff can teach, students can learn, and families can feel confident and supported. During SASS Week, please feel free to drop a thank you note, card, or a small token of your appreciation to let them know how valued they are.

Book Parade

Our Annual Book Parade was a spectacular celebration of imagination and community spirit. Students and staff embraced this year’s national theme—“Book an Adventure!”—with an explosion of creative costumes that transformed our school into a vibrant world of literature come to life. Characters from magical realms, brave explorers, and beloved storybook favourites filled the halls, each radiating enthusiasm and joy.

This year, as Australia marks 80 years of Children’s Book Week, the theme invited everyone to “Book an Adventure”—to journey through stories and explore worlds beyond our own Inspired by this, we saw literary heroes, whimsical creatures, and daring adventurers parade past, making the day truly unforgettable.

It wasn’t just about costumes—our parade was a reminder that reading propels us into new worlds. Between the imaginative dress-ups and the laughter around every corner, we celebrated the joy of reading as a powerful passport to adventure.

Each Can Step Walk-a-Thon

Our Each Can Step Walk-a-thon was a fantastic day filled with energy, colour, and community spirit. Together, our Eastwood community raised over $46,000 – an outstanding effort that will go directly towards supporting our students.

A big thank you to everyone who made the day such a success: to families and friends who sponsored students, to those who donated prizes, and to the many who provided fruit and lollies for that all-important energy boost along the way. Your generosity and support truly made the event shine.

Special recognition goes to Ms Lydia Hahn and her team for their incredible organisation and leadership. Their tireless work behind the scenes ensured the day ran smoothly and that students could enjoy every step. We are very fortunate to have such a dedicated group of teachers who always go the extra mile for our school.

It was a wonderful celebration of teamwork, fun, and community pride — thank you once again to everyone involved!

A Chain of Hearts

The community may have noticed a special new display around Eastwood Public School – our very own Chain of Hearts. Every student in the school designed and decorated a heart, which together have been joined to form a powerful symbol of unity.

This initiative is part of our acknowledgement of National Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC Week. The Chain of Hearts is a symbolic movement that uses colourful paper hearts to express support and raise awareness for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Each heart has been decorated with personal reflections, messages of support, or designs that represent connection and unity. When joined together, they create a “chain” that reflects the strength of our community’s commitment to reconciliation and respect.

By participating, our students have contributed to a collective artwork that not only brightens our school but also stands as a visible reminder of our shared responsibility to walk together in harmony.

Playground Equipment

The long-awaited fixed playground equipment has now been completed and is standing proudly in our school grounds. At the moment it’s still teasing our poor students behind the fencing, as we wait for the final certification before it can be opened.

This exciting addition is the culmination of our Each Can Step Walk-a-thon, and we are so grateful to our amazing community for making it possible. From donations, sponsorships, and endless encouragement, your support has turned this dream into a reality.

We can’t wait to see the joy on our students’ faces as they climb, swing, and play on the new equipment very soon!

NAPLAN - Outstanding NAPLAN Results for Eastwood Public School

We are incredibly proud to share Eastwood’s outstanding NAPLAN results. Across both Year 3 and Year 5, our students have achieved results that are consistently above the State average and ahead of our Statistically Similar Schools (SSSG).

In Year 3, our students excelled in every area, with particularly strong results in Grammar & Punctuation (498.0), Spelling (480.5), and Writing (471.2). These results not only demonstrate that our students are well above State levels, but also highlight the strength of our early years teaching programs and the strong foundations being built for literacy and numeracy.

In Year 5, the results were equally impressive, with Eastwood again performing well above both the State and SSSG averages in all domains. Our highest achievement was in Numeracy (584.6) and Grammar & Punctuation (570.1), showing the depth of our students’ skills and the effectiveness of our teaching practices.

These results are a reflection of the dedication and expertise of our teachers, the hard work of our students, and the ongoing support of our families. We are proud that Eastwood students are not just keeping pace, but excelling and leading the way.

Selective High School Results

We are delighted to share the fantastic results from this year’s Selective High School Placement Test. A total of 74 Eastwood students sat the exam, with 22 students gaining direct acceptance into a Selective High School. This represents an impressive 29.7% success rate – well above the State average.

In addition to these offers, a further 8 students have been placed on the reserve list, bringing the overall success rate to 40.5% of students who sat the test.

These results reflect not only the exceptional effort, commitment, and resilience of our students, but also the outstanding teaching and support provided by our dedicated staff. It is also a testament to the partnership we share with our families, who continue to encourage and nurture their children’s learning journey.

We are incredibly proud of every student who took on the challenge of the Selective Test. Whether they gained placement, secured a reserve spot, or simply gained valuable experience, each one demonstrated courage and persistence. Achievements like this remind us of the strong culture of high expectations and academic excellence here at Eastwood.

Congratulations once again to our students!

Deputy Principals' Report

Stage 1 Happenings - 2BJ

2BJ have been very busy over the past few weeks with a lot of experiential, immersive learning outside the classroom. The highlight was our visit to Rouse Hill Estate as part of our current History Unit.

We stepped back into the year 1889 and learnt about the day to day lives of seven- and eight-year-olds. Daily life depended on hard work – like getting up before sunrise to feed the chickens and milk the cows. Handwashing the clothes for the family was a task that took all day!

Once we were dressed in the clothes of the day, we met our school mistress, Miss Fox. After saluting the British flag, we marched straight into the 1889 schoolroom and sang God Save the Queen. Miss Fox was very strict, wielding the cane to ensure everyone stayed focused on their lessons. We wrote on slate boards with chalk, trying hard to copy the cursive handwriting of the day. Silkworms and their life cycle was the science topic, with many examples of the life stages preserved in glass for us to look at. 2BJ especially enjoyed the sewing lesson and are now competent (relatively) sewers! Outside we danced around the maypole and completed exercises using dumbbells.

This was a fabulous, immersive way to learn about life in the past. 2BJ students returned to EPS tired but happy to be back in 2025.

Stage 2 Happenings - 4S

Over the past few weeks, 4S has been busy exploring drama with plenty of laughter, teamwork, and creativity. Students have enjoyed learning how to capture humorous moments through freeze frames and express a range of emotions and tensions using facial expressions and gestures. They have been building their confidence and collaboration skills through games that challenge them to move in character, for example, dodging invisible lasers, walking like an elderly person, searching for a lost item, or creeping nervously as if something was following them. In one activity, groups worked to untangle themselves from a human knot, combining teams to make the challenge even more exciting!

In other wonderful news, we are celebrating the first round of pen license recipients in 4S. Congratulations to these students, they have demonstrated persistent effort to develop their handwriting skills. We look forward to recognising more achievements soon!

Stage 3 Happenings - 6H

Year 6 have been learning about media literary during English lessons. Students were asked to be journalists during our exciting Science week rotations, take notes and then write a news article based on the activities they participated in. Patricia from 6H wrote an exceptional news article about the week.

6H Students Create Thrilling Mini Paper Roller-coasters!

Have you ever ridden a roller-coaster before? Imagine the thrill packed into a mini model of a paper roller-coaster! Well, that was exactly what the gifted students of 6H had achieved for their science rotations of 2025!

On the 14th of August 2025, the amazingly talented students from 6H explored the themes of kinetic and potential energy through wonderfully crafted mini paper rollercoasters.

The 6/NL classroom of Eastwood Public School, was bustling with excited learners creating and crafting in eager groups. “The lesson was so fun working and crafting, I forgot it was a science class!” Quoted Leanne from 6H. The lesson was packed with students taping, cutting and having fun forming their masterpiece.

In the end, students left with smiling faces, and a memory that would last forever. Memories of the excitement and the hard moments they pushed past to persist in achieving their wonderful goal. It was an amazing time for all, and will be something for the year 5s to look forward to in their next year.

Patricia B

Festival of Choral Music 2025

Have you seen a Manly Ferry? We have! And we have sung about the adventure aboard a Manly Ferry as it went past the “White of the Sails and a bridge there too!” In fact, 40 students from Year 5 and 6 had the incredible opportunity to sing inside the white of the sails, at the iconic Sydney Opera House on August 7.

When we arrived for our day rehearsal, we ‘circumnavigated’ the Opera House, on foot, in search of Benny the seal but alas, Benny was adventuring himself, so we didn’t have the thrill of seeing him this time. We were very grateful for a break in the rain so we could enjoy our “Runch” – (Recess and Lunch combined) in the Botanic Gardens.

We were seated at the very front of the Choir stalls, thanks to Stella, who needed easy access to the stage when she played in the NSW Public School String Sinfonia. The orchestra performed their own item and accompanied the choir for a set of gentle songs. The students had already worked very hard to memorise their 10 songs and they sang and behaved beautifully throughout the rehearsal and the evening performance.

Thank you to all the parents who have assisted their children to attend weekly morning rehearsals at school and for your support in allowing them to have this opportunity.

Ms. Bennett and I were proud of them all.

Mrs. Forster

Festival of Instrumental Music - Sydney Opera House

What an amazing night of talent we witnessed on Tuesday evening in the Concert Hall!  Congratulations to everyone who participated, a fantastic job from all.  Miss Hadfield and I are so proud of how well the recorders performed, especially as some of them only started this year, including all of our Year 4s.  The Bass, Treble and Tenors and the Descant 1s have done an incredible job - thanks for practising so hard.

The strings group spent a lot of the night rehearsing and waiting for their turn at the back of the House, with an absolutely stunning view of our Sydney Harbour Bridge on the purple carpet.  They made a huge splash with their pieces, then the concert concluded with a combined piece so the audience wanted more and an encore was duly performed. What a way to make about 2000 people smile!

The recorder group literally had front row seats to be able to witness the talent of Emma in her feature solo, playing an amazing Guzheng piece, Stella playing a violin solo accompanied by 500+ recorders and Abbie as part of the State Recorder Ensemble! Such talent!

Thank you to the parents for your support, it makes these events possible and more enjoyable.

Here's to next year.

Mrs Meg Hudson

Life Skills GO

At Eastwood Public School, students continue to check in weekly with Life Skills GO, giving us insights into how they are feeling and whether they are ready to learn.

What the Data Shows

  • Strong engagement: 699 of our 708 students checked in at least once this period, showing that students are actively reflecting on their wellbeing.

  • Happy and calm lead the way: The most common feelings were Happy and Calm, which is wonderful to see. However, we also noticed increases in students reporting they were Tired and, to a lesser extent, Sad. This may reflect a combination of mid-term fatigue and the wet weather that has limited outdoor play and active breaks.

  • Readiness to learn is steady: Most students continue to report being ready to learn, but a small number in different year groups checked in experiencing emotional overload. For example, Year 5 had several students showing high levels of stress, which could be linked to the release of selective school results at this time of year.

  • Shifts across year levels: We also saw more students in Year 4 identifying themselves as “in the classroom,” which may reflect their developing awareness of focus and learning habits mid-way through the year.

Tips for Parents at Home

You can help support your child’s wellbeing with small, practical steps:

  • Balance tiredness – encourage a steady sleep routine and downtime, especially as mid-term tiredness builds.

  • Make space for feelings – talk openly about disappointments or worries (such as selective results), and remind your child that effort and persistence matter most.

  • Keep kids moving – on wet days, try simple indoor activities (dance, yoga, stretching) to release energy and lift mood.

  • Celebrate the positives – noticing when your child is happy, calm, or proud reinforces resilience and confidence.

Together, at home and school, we can support every student to feel balanced, positive, and ready to learn through the rest of Term 3.

Gold Award Assembly

This week we were proud to hold our very first Gold Award K–6 Assembly, an important part of our school plan to strengthen belonging across the school and celebrate student achievement.

At this special assembly, we acknowledged a wide range of accomplishments, presenting awards to our new SRC representatives, Environmental representatives, Open Day Art Competition winners, Sports Champions, and of course, our Gold Award recipients.

Our community was also treated to wonderful performances, including our Choir and String Ensemble, as well as a stunning solo by Emma L, who recently performed on the Guzheng at the Opera House as part of the Festival of Instrumental Music.

We warmly thank all the parents and carers who joined us to support their children. Your presence made the celebration even more meaningful, and it was a true reflection of the strong partnership between home and school.

Communicating with Staff

At Eastwood Public School we value the strong partnerships we share with our families. We know that clear communication is the key to working together to support every child.

We kindly remind parents and carers that the best way to contact teachers or executive staff is by emailing the school office. This allows us to arrange a mutually convenient time to meet or return your call, ensuring we can give you our full attention without interrupting valuable learning time.

Just as we encourage our students to communicate with respect, courtesy, and understanding, we thank our families for modelling these same expectations. By working together in this way, we can continue to build a positive and supportive school community for all.

What’s in Your Child’s Lunch Box

Every day, what our children eat at school plays a big role in not just their health—but also their learning. Research from Flinders University found that children with diets high in processed, sugary, or fatty foods performed significantly lower in NAPLAN reading and numeracy tests compared to children who ate more nutritious foods. A poor diet can affect concentration, memory, and energy levels, limiting a child’s ability to learn effectively.

When you pack your child’s lunch, choosing whole foods, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and dairy gives them the fuel they need to focus, think clearly, and feel good throughout the day. Too much processed “sometimes food” can lead to energy crashes and reduced concentration. Tips for a Healthy Lunchbox

  • Balance is key: include fruit, vegetables, wholegrain breads or crackers, lean proteins, and dairy.

  • Limit processed snacks: swap chips, lollies, or sweet drinks for fresh fruit or veggie sticks.

  • Make it fun: colourful fruit skewers, wraps, or yoghurt with berries are easy and appealing.

  • Involve your child: when children help pack their lunch, they’re more likely to eat it.

For more practical tips, menu planners, and recipe ideas, visit the Cancer Council’s Healthy Lunch Box website. It’s a fantastic resource full of creative, nutritious lunchbox ideas for busy families.

By making small, healthy changes to what’s in our lunchboxes, we can give students the best chance to feel well, stay energised, and succeed in their learning.

Celebrating uniqueness through acrostic poems

As part of our YCDI philosophy lesson, Korean students in Years 3 to 5 took part in a thoughtful and creative writing task- composing acrostic poems using the letters of their own names.

The aim of this lesson was to encourage students to reflect on their personal strengths and positive qualities. Each letter of their name represented a characteristic that defined who they are, helping to build self-awareness and confidence. After completing their poems, students decorated them with vibrant colours and designs, showcasing their individuality and creativity.

This activity was not only a fun way to practice literacy skills, but also a meaningful opportunity for students to explore their identity and celebrate the uniqueness of every individual among their peers.

Sport

Zone Athletics

On Monday 18th August, Mrs Morrow, Mrs Perrett and Mr Hoad had the privilege of taking the 2025 Eastwood Zone Athletics team to Sydney Olympic Park to compete against rival schools within the Ryde District.

The morning was beautifully bright and warm, which set us up nicely for a highly successful day. By mid-morning, as the action on the track and field was heating up, the weather took a turn for the worse. The clouds moved in, the temperature plummeted, and the grounds were drenched.

In true Eastwood fashion, the boys and girls continued their pursuit with grit and determination. Despite the weather, the EPS team came first in several events, in both track and field.

A particular mention goes out to the Senior Boys 4 x 100 m relay team, who came bounding home to win first place with a speedy time of 56.69 seconds. Of course, this great achievement would not have been possible without the dedication, time and effort that Mrs Morrow and Mrs Perrot dedicated to the EPS Team, through their specicialised relay training sessions.

A massive, massive congratulations goes out to all of the Eastwood athletes who participated with force, school pride and beautiful sportsmanship.

Lastly, a huge congratulations to the following three students, who we are proud to announce as Ryde Zone Age Champions!

Jayden L (Senior Boys)
Dora W (Junior Girls)
Emily W (Multi Class)

We wish our nine Sydney North Regional Championship qualifying athletes the best of luck in their next races and field events, which will be held on 22nd of September the best of luck.

PSSA

Due to the excessive rain and subsequent field closures during the 2025 Winter PSSA competition, we have lost several rounds of play.

As a result, the season has been extended a further three weeks, concluding on 12 September.

There will be no finals played but medals will be awarded to the teams coming first on each ladder at the end of the season and ribbons awarded to the teams coming second on each ladder. Medals and ribbons will be distributed to winning schools after the final round.

Ten Pin Bowling

Eastwood Bowling team qualify for the State ten pin Bowling Final!!

Congratulations to our team of 4 ten pin bowlers - Carmeline, Orville, Eric and Selina - who had a FUN and very successful day at the recent Sydney North ten pin bowling tournament. By finishing 3rd at Sydney North, they have now qualified to play in the State finals on 25th September.
The team practiced regularly at school then, on the day, bowled with consistency and finished strongly to win 3rd place in the tournament. These students have certainly demonstrated how you can be successful just by having FUN while you work on improving your skills.
The NSW DET Sports Unit offers a wide range of sporting opportunities for students of ALL interests and abilities. This includes PSSA sports as well as golf, tennis, orienteering to name just a few - have a look on the Sports Unit web site. The Inclusive Sports program that is part of the Sports Unit, organises a variety of tournaments and sports opportunities for students living with extra challenges in their life such as students who have a diagnosed disability. Ten pin bowls is one if the sports offered.
Congratulations once again to our bowlers!! Good luck and have FUN doing your best on 25th September.
